The Venture Program Clinical Team employs two full time Crisis Counselors who are available for our students when they feel an urgent need to talk with someone. This may occur between their regularly scheduled individual therapy sessions when the availability of a skilled counselor is crucial. It is important for our students to be able to identify when they are heading towards a crisis and be able to ask and receive help quickly. The Crisis Counselors work with the clinical team and each student to develop an individual crisis plan best suited to each student’s needs. Their objectives are to assist students to identify their triggers, learn how to verbalize feelings and not act out. The ultimate goal of the crisis counselors, in collaboration with the therapists and the Child Psychiatric APN, is to foster the students’ management of their behaviors and the regulation of their emotions.
During the Summer AD-Venture Program, Ms. Donna Peszko and Mr. Miguel Perdomo ran the Community Meeting each morning. The day started with announcements about the upcoming day and the activities and trips planned for the week. Ms. Peszko and Mr. Perdomo also facilitated discussions during these daily meetings which aligned with the core competency theme for the week. These themes included: identifying feelings in yourself and others, empathy, impulse control, problem-solving and anger management. The Summer AD-Venture Program of 2013 was a great success. Our students are looking forward to another exciting summer next year.

Our recent symposium, Object Relations Theory: The Functional Application and Strategies in a Therapeutic Learning Environment was a great success! Our clinical team presented a clear, concise primer on the development of Attachment Theory and how we have used this theory to create our very unique and structured therapeutic program. At Venture, we work hard to create an environment that is inclusive of all staff, both academic and clinical, brought together with a single mission: to create a safe haven and holding environment, while nurturing secure attachments with specific sensitivity to the unique needs of our student population. The clinical staff provides ongoing education through discussion, consultation, case presentations, and the sharing of the most pertinent and current literature. We are truly a united front.
The entire structure of our program, including the academic curriculum, incorporates core social competency skills. These social competencies were selected to reflect the executive functions that our students require to develop proficiency in their social, emotional, and cognitive lives. This is the time for us to quietly reflect upon accomplishments we have seen from our students since the beginning of the school year. Many of them have made remarkable strides, both academically and socially. It is easy to become so engrossed in our daily routine with the students and lose track of how fortunate we are to have the opportunity to work with our students and make a difference. There is not any profession in the world, which provides such satisfaction and pride as education. There is no greater reward than seeing our students achieve their best.
As we are observing our respective holidays, we should never lose sight of those things that connect us all and bring us together. While celebrating our individuality we should always remember to appreciate and acknowledge every gesture of common good will expression. The most important task as an administrator is to establish a safe and happy learning environment where students can concentrate and do their best learning. It is teamwork and the most important members of this team are students, staff and parents. I am always available for any suggestion and recommendation from this team to continue to maintain this goal.
