BCSS Assistive Technology Department

At Bergen County Special Services, Assistive Technology (AT) is used to support students in accessing the curriculum and to support literacy learning. We specialize in AT for communication, access, literacy and numeracy.  Our technology supports students with needs in reading, writing, understanding curricular materials, and communication. For example, we use word prediction software to help students put their thoughts into writing; math processing software to help students who cannot use paper and pencil to do math problems; and augmentative communication devices to assist students with speech and language disabilities. Our Assistive Technology Department services students both in-district, and out-of-district.

The Assistive Technology Department provides the following services:

  • Comprehensive AT and AAC (Augmentative Communication) Evaluations including equipment recommendations and utilization goals
  • Collaboration with local district technology support for AT and AAC equipment set-up
  • Device and software programming
  • Implementation of special software and strategies to enhance the skills of students with learning disabilities
  • Training for student, parent, and educational team based on personalized recommendations for the student
  • Provision of ongoing AT and AAC modifications to meet student needs
  • Follow-up support integrating AT and AAC into the student’s learning environment
  • Group in-service programs on use of specific AT and AAC tools and methods for integrating them into the classroom
