The Hillcrest School educates students, ages three through fourteen, with special needs who demonstrate delays in the cognitive, social, and behavioral domains. Instruction specializes in developing the whole child, addressing his or her needs in the areas of cognition, socialization, behavioral growth, communication, physical fitness, and self-care. Hillcrest learning provides Individual Education Plan (IEP)-driven instruction that focuses on the mastery of academic functional skills required for daily living and vocational experiences. All students benefit from training in the areas of health, personal and workplace safety, and appropriate social interactions. A full day of academic learning takes place in safe and secure environments, both in the school building and in the community. Students are prepared to be successful in life through experiences that include academic studies, vocational training, and exposure to community living.

Functional/Traditional academics are aligned to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. The NJ Alternative Proficiency Assessment is administered as required. Progress reports are issued three times per year. Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled in November and upon request.

On behalf of the faculty, staff, and administration of Bergen County Special Services Hillcrest School, I would like to welcome you to the 2008-2009 school year. I look forward to not only working with each and every student individually, but with everyone in the Hillcrest Community. All students at Hillcrest will be given many opportunities to excel. Every child learns in their own way. At Hillcrest, all staff members ensure that each child reaches their highest level of individual potential.
