Communication Skills Continuum- HIP at Hackensack
Through the outstanding efforts of both deaf and hearing staff members at Union Street School, children from preschool through grade eight are afforded the educational opportunities that promote language, cognition, signed and verbal communication skills, and a strong sense of self-esteem. Union Street School emphasizes a general education curriculum adapted when needed to meet the unique learning styles of each student. Curriculum areas are integrated through a thematic approach. A Balanced Literacy Program enhances reading, writing, and communication skills. Instruction in each curriculum area addresses the Cumulative Progress Indicators of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. The content of each curriculum, provided by the Hackensack Public Schools' Guide to the Curriculum, is presented through learning activities that:

(1) Match student strengths and diverse needs
(2) Involve a rich Balanced Literacy Approach
(3) Incorporate multiple intelligences
(4) Address goals and objectives as outlined in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards
(5) Develop student competencies in Workplace Readiness Skills
