Communication Skills Continuum- HIP at Hackensack Through the outstanding efforts of both deaf and hearing staff members at Union Street School, children from preschool through grade eight are afforded the educational opportunities that promote language, cognition, signed and verbal communication skills, and a strong sense of self-esteem. Union Street School emphasizes a general education curriculum adapted when needed to meet the unique learning styles of each student. Curriculum areas are integrated through a thematic approach. A Balanced Literacy Program enhances reading, writing, and communication skills. Instruction in each curriculum area addresses the Cumulative Progress Indicators of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. Summer 2010 Summer 2010The Summer Program at Union Street School for the Deaf offers students in 1st through 8th grade an academic "fun" program with themes centered around Math and Language Arts. This yea's theme was "Our Wild and Wacky Weather." Activities included a "Weather Word Search" contest that required students to find vocabulary words within the word "Stratosphere", and an "Afternoon Shadow Collection" by the preschool students. |
