Behavioral Skills Continuum - NOVA North The NOVA North program, located at the Emerson Junior/Senior High School, educates students in grades seven through twelve who are academically capable but require support to handle a mainstream setting. NOVA students have had a variety of behavioral issues in the past, but by the time they enter this program they have begun to develop insight into their behaviors. In school level counseling, students continue to work upon understanding their behaviors, substituting appropriate behaviors and finding and strengthening alternative coping mechanisms. Counseling is available to all NOVA students. NOVA staff work with parents as needed and as requested. Students participate in all state-mandated testing: ASK 7 is administered to seventh-graders; ASK 8 is administered to eighth-grade students; Progress is formally reported eight times per year in quarterly report cards that reflect Emerson's grading system, mid-term exams, final exams, and two mid-marking period reports. Additionally, NOVA teachers prepare two Progress reports reflecting progress toward IEP goals. The IEP/AR meeting is held at least once a year. The NOVA staff is available for additional meetings and may initiate additional meetings. If a student attends NOVA North for three years or more and continues through to high school graduation, he or she has the option of receiving an Emerson diploma or a diploma from his or her town of residence. |
