Middle School Math Whizzes

Trampoline Team

Shachi B., Irakli D., Viola K., and Benjamin N. were selected to represent SHIP Midland Park in an annual math competition at National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID).  The students spent their lunch periods with their advisor, Ms. Makowski, practicing various concepts and complex problem-solving puzzles. Finally, after months of preparation, they embarked on a 7-hour long ride to Rochester for the math competition!

Welcome to Rochester

Accompanied by their coaches Ms. Makowski and Mr. Yousef, the team arrived at their destination and received a warm welcome from the NTID Math Committee and met other deaf and hard-of-hearing students from across the United States and even Canada! The students began the first round of competition on Friday night: a team event which consisted of ten problems they had to solve within a specific time frame. After this round, the students anticipated a competitive but fun day ahead of them on Saturday!

The following day, the team participated in “Amazing Race” with coaches in which they had to solve challenging puzzles as quickly as possible while collaborating with students from other schools.  Halfway through the intense competition, the students took a break during Social Hour where they interacted and played games with their peers.

Social Hour

That evening was filled with excitement as the SHIP students landed in the final round of six teams!
