Green House

Scott Kallensee, Chartwells Director of Dining Services and Beth McCann, Chartwells Assistant Director of Dining Services presented Superintendent Howard Lerner, Director of Instruction Tara Bohan and the staff and students of New Bridges with a generous donation of raised beds and garden soil for our horticulture program. New Bridges students have been planting herbs and vegetables in the greenhouse and will soon fill the beds donated by Chartwells with summer vegetables. This week we harvested our first group of lettuce which was made into delicious salads for staff and students. Our school community is looking forward to expanding our crop making us a farm to table school!

DonnaMs. Donna Gross started her employment with Bergen County Special Services in 1998 as a Workshop Assistant in the Paramus Rehabilitation Program. During her tenure, Ms. Gross transferred to Wood-Ridge when a number of adults relocated to that site. After supporting adults in the Wood-Ridge location, Ms. Gross returned to the Paramus site in May of 2014.

When Ms. Gross initially entered the Paramus program in 1998 the workshop was in full production mode. Clients were involved with multiple assembly tasks on any given day. The Program affectionately called themselves a mini Ford factory and many days felt they were fulfilling more orders than Amazon.com. Ms. Gross was an integral part of the pace, instilling confidence in clients with a spirited “you can do it” message!

Ms. Gross reinforced skills and consistently explained the benefits of achieving these goals. She promoted independence at every turn, and took great pride in each adult’s achievements.

Ms. Gross’s rapport with clients encouraged many to leave their comfort level and try something new. It also brought about increased self-awareness; each client having a better sense of self in terms of what they wanted. It made each client feel valued and important. Ms. Gross frequently worked with clients on how to assert for and take care of themselves. We called this “Strong Talk” and Donna was always there to role play and provide support.

Ms. Gross was a pioneer, instrumental in developing the first client talent show, called “Paramus Got Talent”. Ms. Gross working tirelessly over a period of months to see each client showcase a talent. Needless to say, the talent show was a tremendous success, and well attended by family, friends and group home personnel.

The Bergen County Special Services School District and Board of Education would like to thank Ms. Gross for her many years of dedication
